Mantel Clocks

Mantel clocks are similar to a "bracket" clock with some very noticeable differences. You will usually find them to be both smaller and and not as deep when it comes to the dimensions.
The earliest examples of Mantel Clocks are believed to originate in France and dated somewhere around 1750.

The English version of the Mantel clocks came on the scene approximately 10 years later as the style caught on across the channel.

The early French version of the Mantel clocks were derived from French Regency bracket clocks. They morphed from the bracket clock when similar clocks were created in Rococo style using no mounting bracket.

The term Mantel Clock came into being simply because it was common to set these clocks on the mantel over the fire. The name simply stuck and is what we still know them as today.

Most collectors find it easy to distinguish English mantel clocks from French ones and find the English examples to have superb mechanisms. The English Mantel clock graced most studies and libraries and was the more popular of the two.
